Sixty-eight year old, actor and director, Michael Douglas has made his way into the homes of millions once again.
However, this time the actor is not going to win a Golden Globe or Academy Award for his role.
The prize for his efforts, in this instance, is the knowledge that his message could save lives.
The PSA message recorded by the man, whose fame grew by leaps and bounds for his role in Wall Street in 1987, discusses the importance of a major dental problem.
“One cancer isn’t heard about enough,” Douglas says, after calling attention to the fact that so many other forms of cancer receive regular media coverage today.
It’s true that oral cancer has not received the same sense of respect as other varieties of the deadly disease.
Unfortunately, many make incorrect assumptions about oral cancer, believing it to be a condition of the elderly or the heavy smokers. Many young, non-smokers, though, are finding out the truth the hard way
Douglas was among the many that came to learn the devastating effects of this mouth condition.
He sought medical help in 2010 for a sore throat. It was discovered at the time that he had a tumor at the base of his tongue.
The cancer was ruled to be Stage IV squamous cell carcinoma.
His hope, and the hope of many, is that his message, which will appear throughout the United States, will make people increasingly aware of the problem and promote early detection with
simple screenings at regular dentist visits.
