Gum disease, which is more officially known as periodontal disease, is a far too common occurrence. While most Americans have heard the term, did you know that there is more than one type of gum disease? Actually, there are two types, which can be further broken down by severity and symptoms.
Gingivitis is probably the most common type and also the less severe type. With the onset of this disease, the gums will often become red, swollen, and may bleed more easily. This does not always equate to pain or even discomfort and this type can be easily reversed with proper dental care. It is important to understand that gingivitis is often the result of inadequate oral hygiene. This means that you are more susceptible if you are failing to brush and floss regularly.
Periodontitis is the result of untreated gingivitis. The plaque and bacteria that produced the irritated gums is allowed to spread, which will mean increased irritation. As a result, the tissue and bone that keep the tooth in place and safe, will begin to breakdown. Pockets between the tooth and gum will occur, which allows further plaque and bacteria to reach the tooth’s infrastructure. This disease is further broken down. It is very important to seek emergency dental care if one feels there is the possibility that he or she is infected with some form of gum disease. Immediate care is the best defense.
