When most of us think of getting a crown, we imagine multiple trips to the dentist’s office, having dental impressions made, getting a temporary crown until the real one comes back from the lab and finally having the crown fitted with dental adhesive. But if you choose a CEREC crown, you’ll be able to skip several of those steps.
Originally developed in the early 1980s and first used widely on patients in 1985, the CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) procedure is a method of creating a crown using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology. This process enables your dentist to create the crown and insert it all in a single dental visit.
The procedure involves first making a digital impression of the patient’s tooth on a CAD computer. Then, utilizing special equipment designed for the CEREC procedure, the dentist and his or her staff are able to actually create the crown and insert it in the patient’s mouth during the same visit.
Some of the benefits of a CEREC crown are obvious, particularly in regard to the single office visit. But there are other advantages as well. The ceramic material used to create CEREC crowns feels and looks more like your natural teeth than some other materials. And crowns made from digital impressions are typically more comfortable than those made in the traditional way.
Ask your dentist for more information about CEREC crowns. He or she can help you decide if this is the best choice for you and your family.
