Dentists have been using crowns for decades. A crown is a protective cover for an existing tooth, and is typically made from a dental impression of the actual tooth, which is then cemented in place, creating a permanent solution for the damaged tooth. You or a family member could choose a crown to cover a broken tooth, cover a tooth after a root canal has been performed, to strengthen teeth used as anchors for a dental bridge, or to protect a weak tooth that is likely to crack in the future.
Over the years, crowns have been made of several different materials, including metal, porcelain-infused metal, porcelain or ceramic material, or resin. A CEREC crown is made of resin or ceramic materials, similar to other types of crowns. But the difference lies in how the crown is created and how long it takes from the patient’s point of view. Unlike the procedure involved with other types of crowns — which usually involves having dental impressions, waiting several days for the crown to be made, wearing a temporary crown for some period of time, and at least two different trips to the dentist’s office –a CEREC crown is made in the dentist’s office during the patient’s first visit. Using computer technology, an impression is made of the affected tooth, after which the crown is created in the dentist’s office and placed into the patient’s mouth – all in a single visit!
Ask Dr. John at Austin Dental Center for more information about CEREC crowns and whether you or a member of your family might be a good candidate for this revolutionary dental procedure.
