Cavities, which are formed by bacteria-related decay can be dangerous to the integrity of the tooth and can even lead to more serious complications if not treated. Thus, people all over this country and beyond find their way to the dental chair to receive fillings each year. Most frequently this conjures images of a dark silver substance formed into the tooth.
However, that may not be the case much longer.
A United Nations gathering was scheduled for the purpose of discussing dental health not long ago and the primary topic of conversation was the ‘silver’ or amalgam filling. Contained within the silver concoction is a small dose of mercury and though this substance has been used in the mouths of people all over the world for generations, the UN is being advised by many professional organizations to ban it.
Mercury use has been forbidden in the making of most other products over recent decades, yet it is still used in teeth. Many feel that there is something wrong with that line of thinking, especially when considering the use of this product in the mouths of children.
Mercury has been shown to have devastating effects on human beings after prolonged exposure, including serious damage to the nervous system. Exposure can be passed from mother to unborn child, as well.
Even if the international delegates of this globally recognized organization do not concur with the recommendations, chances are good that the American public will soon see a day when ‘silver’ fillings are a thing of the past.
